Stop the Background Process & Restart Adobe
If your Adobe Acrobat cannot open PDF files on Windows as expected, you can stop the background process and restart the software. The reason is that most processes keep running in the background even when you have closed the program. And when the processes become too many, it can affect Adobe’s performance.
Steps
- Open Task Manager.
- Look for all Adobe Acrobat processes.
- Right-click the processes and choose End Task.
- When you are done, you can try opening Adobe Acrobat again to see if it will work.
Run Adobe as Administrator
Running an app as an administrator and running the same app without administrator privileges are not the same. This is because when you run the software as administrator, the system gives you access to all the files in that app. This is why it is recommended that you run Adobe Acrobat as administrator if you ever notice it is not working.
Steps
- Right-click the Adobe shortcut icon on your desktop and choose properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab when the properties window opens up.
- Click Advanced.
- Check Run as administrator.
- Click on OK.

Run Adobe in Compatibility Mode
You may be trying to run Adobe on an operating system it does not support. This is particularly so when using the most recent versions of Windows. Some PDF editor support older versions of Windows. To correct this anomaly, follow the steps below;

- Right-click the Adobe shortcut and open Properties.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
- Check Compatibility mode.
- Choose the old Window version from the options presented.
- Click Apply, and hit OK.
Repair & Update Adobe Acrobat
It is not out of place for specific files inside an app to become corrupt for one reason or the other. However, when Adobe Reader has a corrupt file, don’t expect it to function normally. A lot of reasons could be responsible for Adobe having corrupt files. To get this problem fixed, try to repair Adobe Reader.
Steps
- Open Adobe Acrobat.
- Select the Help tab.
- Click Repair Installation. (if the issue persists afterward, search for updates online, as that could help fix the problem)
